What does AFEPI offer its members?
As a Full member of AFEPI, we offer you a directory entry on our website, which is visited regularly by publishers and independent clients. Associate members have a listing page.
We also have an email discussion group, which enables all our members to stay in touch throughout the year. AFEPI members also receive the Publishing Ireland e-newsletter, thanks to our associate membership of Publishing Ireland. In liaison with Publishing Ireland and other professional bodies, we try to source training courses of interest to our members. Two or three times a year we organise social events.
The day-to-day business of AFEPI is run by a voluntary committee elected by the members at each AGM. The AGM is held in Dublin, usually in January or February.
All members must adhere to our Code of Practice (PDF) (clicking the link will automatically download it to your computer).
How much does membership cost?
The annual subscription is €60 for members and €45 for associate members (as of January 2016).
Joining AFEPI as a copy-editor or proofreader
You must be living and working in Ireland or Northern Ireland to apply for membership.
Applications are vetted by a Membership Committee made up of five experienced members of the association.
Full membership applies to experienced and qualified proofreaders, copy-editors and indexers. We will ask for proof of qualifications, experience and references.
Those new to freelance editing, proofreading or indexing may apply for associate membership of AFEPI after they have gained a recognised qualification and some limited work experience with a commercial client (we will ask for references). Associate members can apply for full membership after a further one or two years if they have gained further training or feel they have gained sufficient experience in the meantime.
Applicants should be aware that standards of spelling, grammar, punctuation and consistency in the application form are also taken into account by the Membership Assessment Committee when making its decision.
You should expect to hear back from the Membership Assessment Committee within four weeks.
If, after due deliberation, the Membership Sub-Committee considers that an application does not meet the criteria required, the AFEPI Executive Committee will notify the applicant and advise on requirements for a renewed application.
Payment is only requested if the application is approved.
